Phrygian Dominant

The Phrygian Dominant Scale is actually a Mode of the Harmonic Minor Scale. This PDF is of the A Harmonic Minor Scale and the E Phrygian Dominant Scale.

One way of looking at the Phrygian Dominant scale that can simplify visualizing the scale shapes is to take the notes of an E chord (E, G#, B), add the notes 1 fret higher (F, A, C, which happens to be an F chord). This gives you 6 of the 7 notes of the scale without having to memorize scale shapes. Add in the b7 (D) and you get the entire scale (E, F, G#, A, B, C, D).

The Backing Track above is a simple 2 chord progression - A Minor to E7. Try to play the E Phrygian Dominant Scale over the E7 chord.

*note that you can play this scale over both chords but try to really focus on playing it only over the E7 chord.
